SCI-Arc is a quarter mile in length, and very horizontal. The primary mode of transportation for students along the building’s lengthy polished cement hallway, aside from walking, is either a scooter or a skateboard. After a few unsuccessful attempts, I finalized a design for a longboard that was particularly fast, durable and cut into turns really well. Having already designed the shape, I experimented with the technique of staining the board by hand with a fountain pen and ink. The effect was marvelous: the fibers of the wood took the ink along a natural course, ‘bleeding’ away from the fine geometric lines I had drawn in. The result is a beautiful and deep ink stain that is similar to a tattoo on the skin.
